However, edema i.e. swelling of legs, feet or hands and finger is very common as the pregnancy progresses. If edema gets severe, finger or toe rings, anklets, bangles will start fitting tightly and cause discomfort. There are cases where the pregnant lady has had to cut the finger rings in order to remove them. You must take this into consideration and wear loose fitting jewellery or remove it if it starts getting tight.
In the case of costume or junk jewellery, toxic metals like lead, cadmium, mercury or nickel are used. Toxic materials are associated with issues like miscarriages, pre-eclampsia, infertility, menstrual difficulties, premature birth and even pregnancy induced hypertension. While the toxic material on these metals or jewellery is not immediately absorbed by the body, there is an increased chance. Harsh weather, erosion of metal or contact with sweat may lead to minute absorption of these materials in the body, which can pose complications. Hence, it is best to avoid junk, cheap costume jewellery during pregnancy. Gold, silver or inert metal jewellery can be used with basic care.
Unconventional pierced jewellery can also be a source of infection and is best avoided when pregnant.
